JL leader accused of shooting baby in womb killed in ‘shootout’


A local Jubo League leader was killed in a reported shootout between his associates and police in Doarpar municipality area of the Magura district town early Tuesday.
The deceased, Azibar, is an accused in the case filed in connection with the Jubo League factional clash in Magura that killed a person and left an expecting mother and her baby inside the womb wounded by bullets.
Assistant superintendent of police Sudarshan Kumar Roy said tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area when a group of people, including Azibar, were holding a secret meeting there at about 12:30 am.Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, members of the group opened fire on them, forcing police to fire back that triggered a gun battle.
Azibar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his other associates managed to flee the scene.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Magura Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Police also recovered one revolver, one light gun and some bullets from the spot.
Seven-month expecting mother, Nazma Begum, 30, her uncle-in-law Momin Bhuiyan,65, and another man, Miraz, 30, suffered bullet injuries as they were caught in the line of fire during a clash between two groups of Jubo League over establishing supremacy at Doarpara in sadar upazila in the evening of July 23.
They were taken to Sadar Hospital where Nazma gave birth to a baby through Caesarean section on that night.
It was found after the birth that the newborn also suffered bullet wounds while in the womb.
Momin Bhuiyan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on July 25.
Later, the baby of Nazma was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital on July 25.
A case was filed against 16 people with Magura Sadar Police Station on July 26.- UNB
