Promote disabled peoples’ accessibility, people urged


A “National Dialogue onPromotion of Disabled Peoples’ Accessibility 2015” was held at VIP Lounge (1st Floor) of Bangladesh National Press Club, Dhaka on 30 December 2015, organized by Bangladesh Protbandhi Kallyan Somity (BPKS) in cooperation with Bread for the World, Germany. The objective of dialogue is to sensitize the all relevant policy-makers to enhance promotion and acceleration of implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) and relevant Bangladesh laws.More than 50 of representatives from different ministries or departments of government and civil society organizations including Disabled Peoples’ Organizations (DPOs) attended the dialogue.
The Secretary of Social Welfare Ministry of Bangladesh Government Mr. Tariq-Ul-Islam addressed the program as Chief Guest and Mr. Architect Mubasher Hossain, Formal President of Bangladesh Architect Institutes addressed the dialogue as Special Guests. The dialogue sessions was facilitated and presided over by Mr. Abdus Sattar Dulal, UNESCAP Disability Rights Champion and Founder & Executive Director of BPKS.
An audio visual presentation of BPKS emphasized the present situation of disabled people accessibility in the areas of transport, public places/building, information system. The presentation highlighted national and international law support of the issue, but there is no reflection on the ground.
Respected Government high officials mentioned that there is a building code and rules of business set out, which is in reality on progress, but the level of momentum or enforcement is rather slow and complex. They mentioned some temporary arrangement maybe a solution for present inaccessible features. The chief guest, Secretary Mr. Tariq-Ul-Islam stressed the issue of accessibility and universal design as per the building code is to be highest importance for disabled people development and their free movement or participation.
The president of the session Mr. Sattar mentioned that there was a point of consensus among distinguish government responsible high officials is to ensure accessibility for all including those who are disabled people citizen. It has to be considered as a national priority development issue. Also there is an urgent need of multi-stakeholders and duty bearers meeting to be convened by the Prime Minister from which a concrete guideline will be produced to execute the existing laws regarding accessibility of disabled people. – Press release
