River vessel workers to go on strike Wednesday night


River vessel workers will go on a countrywide work abstention from Wednesday midnight to press home their 15-point demand.The decision was taken at an emergency meeting held at Barisal unit office of Bangladesh Launch Workers’ Association on Tuesday, said a press release signed by senior joint secretary of the unit Md Ekin Ali Master.

Workers of all types of river vessels, including passenger launch, cargo vessel, postal vessel, tanker, sand cargo, dredger and shallow tanker, will observe the work abstention.

The workers’ demands include endowing appointment letter and service book to each worker, ensuring social safety of workers, fixing Tk 10,000 as the minimum wage, paying the cost of treatment of workers who sustain injuries on duty and paying the wages during the treatment.

The meeting was presided over by the Association’s president Sheikh Abul Hashem Master.
