‘Robber’ injured in Satkhira ‘gunfight’ with cops


An alleged robber was injured in a gunfight between his cohorts and police at Kumira Motorcycle Stand in Tala upazila early Saturday.The injured was identified as Shajahan,40, son of late Gahar Sarder of Dhandia village of the same upazila.
Officer-in-charge of Patkelghata Police Station Tariqul Islam said on a tip-off that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in the area by placing logs, a team of police launched a drive in the area at about 1:30 am.Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the gang members opened fire on them prompting the police personnel to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight, leaving Shahjahan injured with bullets.Later, police recovered injured Shahjahan while his other associates managed to flee the scene.Injured Shahjahan was admitted to Satkhira Sadar Hospital under police custody.Police also recovered bullet shells, a machete and some logs from the
spot.There are three murder cases filed against Shahjahan, the OC added.Atiar Sardar, brother of Shahjahan, said police had picked up Shahjahan from Dhandia Ashok Bazar on Wednesday night.He also claimed police did not admit his brother’s arrest. -UNB, Satkhira
