RU teacher killing: Classes, exams suspended for 3 days


Protesting the murder of Professor Rezaul Karim Siddiqi, a teacher of Rajshahi University (RU), all academic activities including classes and exams were suspended at the University as a part of 3 day long strike called by Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA) on Sunday.
Most of the class rooms of the university were under the lock and student attendance was so few.
Besides, RUTA brought put a silent procession that paraded main streets of the campus and ended at the premises of the university senate building with a gathering. Students and teachers of the English department of the university also organised a procession that later.University VC Professor Dr. Muhammad Mizanuddin, Pro-VC Professor Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan, RUTA general secretary  Shah Azam Shata, Former VC Professor Saidur Rahman Khan were present there.
Declaration of different kinds of protesting program came from the meeting while immediate punishment of this killing was sought by the speakers.
Progressive Student Alliance (PSA) of the university made a demonstration before the university central library at 12.00 pm.
On the other hand, police have arrested a suspect youth on Saturday at night.
Additional Commissioner of the RCC police station Tamiz Uddin Sarkar informed this after the meeting with the VC on Saturday morning.
We could not mention the name of the detained for the further investigation, he added.
A source informed that, the detained is Hafizur Rahman, a student of 2nd year of Public Administration of the department.
The case was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi from Boalia Police Station.
Making the Additional Police Commissioner Tamij Uddin as a Convenor a six member monitoring sell has been formed for investigation of this murder.
The deceased was buried in home village Dargamaria under the Bagmara Upazila on Saturday night.
Noted, in Shalbagan area of the Rajshahi City Professor Rezaul Karim was hacked to death by some assailants on satuday morning while he was coming to university.
Islamic State (IS) a militant group based in the Middle East claimed the liability of killing Siddiqi on their official website on Saturday night. – RU Correspondent
