Sangshad session begins


Dhaka-The 12th session of the 10th Parliament began yesterday with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair. Opposition Jatiya Party (Ershad) lawmakers participated in the session.According to decision of Business Advisory committee, this will be a brief session as it has been summoned to go by a constitutional provision to convene the session of parliament between 60 days.
President Abdul Hamid summoned the session exercising the power bestowed upon him according to clause (1) of the article 72 of the constitution.
After the meeting of the BAC, the house went to the day’s business at about 5:10pm.
The BAc decided to run the session till October 10. The day’s business will begin at 5:00pm everyday.
The meeting of Business Advisory council was held at Sangsad Bhaban before the begging of the session to determine the tenure of the session.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the meeting while Opposition leader Raushan Ershad, JP chairman Hussain Muhammad Ershad, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu, commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Suranjit Sengupta, Abul Hasnat Abdullah, chief whip ASM Feroz and law minister Anisul Haq attended the meeting.
Leader of the House and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was absent in the meeting due to her visit to United States of America.
Welcoming the lawmakers of treasury and opposition bench, the Speaker nominated a panel of chairman to run the session in absence of the Speaker and deputy Speaker.
The panel chairmen are Abdul Matin Khasru, Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury, Enamul Haque, Fakhrul Imam and Ayesha Ferdous.
The Speaker then moved obituary references separately with brief resumes on those who died since prorogation of the 11th session of the 10th parliament.
The House unanimously adopted the obituary references on a number of distinguished personalities, including two former state ministers and four MPs.
While moving the references, the Speaker said the House expresses its deep shock at the deaths of a former member of constitution framing committee and MP M Abdur Rahim, two former state ministers M Korban Ali and M Fazlur Rahman Patal, four former MPs Alhaj Professor Dr M A Mannan, Ali Reza Raju, Abdur Razzak Khan and Manabendra Narayan Larma and a driver of the parliament secretariat M Biplob Hossain.
The House also condoled the death of poet Shahid Quadri, complainant of the Bangabandhu Murder Case freedom fighter AFM Mohitul Islam, Awami League leader Prof Nazma Rahman, freedom fighter Shirin Banu Mitil, legendary boxer Mohammad Ali, friend of liberation war Sydney Schonberg, former vice-chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Sadruddin Ahmed Chawdhury and actor Farid Ali.
The House also condoled the deaths people in a boiler explosion at Tampaco Foils Factory at Tongi, launch capsize in the Sandhya river at Banaripara in Barishal.
The Speaker conveyed deep sympathy to the members of the bereaved families and prayed for peace of his departed souls.
The lawmakers also observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls. Later, a munajat was offered seeking eternal peace of the departed souls.-STAFF REPORTER
