Dhaka – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said Bangladesh will be able to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) only if Awami League remains in power, UNB news agency reported.“If any party of looters comes to power, it cannot be achieved as they’ll indulge in looting, money laundering, plundering orphans’ money…these will start again along with oppression and repression,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina, also the president of the ruling Awami League, said this in her introductory speech at a meeting of its Council Preparation Committee at her official residence Ganobhaban.
She stressed the importance of organising the party better through its upcoming council to be held on October 22-23 at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.
Through this council, Hasina said, the new leadership will emerge.
She said Awami League as a party has to support the government’s development activities so that these development programmes could be finished making the country free from poverty. “Our only aim is to make the country free from poverty; we’ve already reduced the poverty rate,” she said.
The AL chief put emphasis on working tirelessly with this specific aim. “We’ve to utilise the time that we have.”
In the coming days, she said, the government will develop the socio-economic status of the country alongside bringing back the confidence and trust of people. “We’re running the government keeping the spirit of the Liberation War for building a poverty- and hunger-free Bangladesh as dreamt by Bangabandhu, and we can do that.”
Expressing her hope to organise the party in a better way through the upcoming council, Hasina said all have to remember that the socioeconomic status of the country will develop as long as Awami League remains in power. “We’ve seen the country’s development gets stagnant without Awami League,” she said.
Recalling the conspiracies to unseat the Awami League government in the past, Hasina said the government has witnessed so many blows to it. “There were conspiracies to taint us, there was an allegation of corruption against us, there were killings and burning of people to remove us from power; local and international organisations tried to dislodge us from power by bringing various allegations against us,” she mentioned.
Hasina thanked people for keeping their trust and confidence in Awami League. “Taking the trust and confidence of people, we’ve been able to maintain the country’s pace of socioeconomic development,” she said.
