Kurigram, 29 Dec -An elderly woman was burnt to death in a fire that originated from an electric short-circuit in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram late on Saturday night.
The deceased was identified as Sahera Begum, 85, wife of late Kawsar Ali of Madhyo Bazar area under Bajra union of the upazila.
Neighbours said Sahera had been living with her elder son Mokhlesar Rahman, a three-wheeler driver by profession, in the area.
Family members went to a Waz Mahfil, leaving her alone in the house on Saturday night.
Around 12 am, a fire broke out and engulfed the entire house while the elderly woman was stuck inside, they said.
Ulipur Fire Service Station’s In-Charge Abbas Ali said being informed they rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control.
The woman was found burnt to death when the fire was doused, he said, adding that the fire erupted from an electric short-circuit.
Ulipur police station’s Officer-in-Charge Jillur Rahman also confirmed the death.
