BNP observes Zia birth anniversary

The party flag was hoisted at the BNP headquarters early in the morning.

The leader of the 18-Party Alliance and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia placed a wreath at the grave of her late husband in the capital’s Chandrima Udyan at 11:45am.

She then prayed for the salvation of the soul of the deceased leader.

Members of the BNP Standing Committee and other party leaders accompanied her.

Later wreaths were placed on behalf of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Juba Dal, Krishak Dal, Mahila Dal, DAB, AAB and other frontal organisations of the BNP.

Ziaur Rahman was born in Bogra on Jan 19, 1936. On Mar 26, 1971 he called for the country’s independence from Chittagong on behalf of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Later he was a Sector Commander of the Liberation War.

He was also the Captain of the “Z Force” during the Liberation War and was later awarded Bir Uttam for his bravery during the fight for independence.

After independence, he became Bangladesh’s Army Chief and later the President during military rule.

Zia came to power after a political turmoil in the country following the killing of Bangabandhu.

He formed the BNP on Sep 1, 1978.

The former President was killed in a coup in 1981. Since then the BNP is being headed by his wife Khaleda Zia.bdnews24.com
