The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has frozen the bank accounts of several well-known figures from Bangladesh's entertainment industry due to alleged non-payment of income tax. The action has sparked significant public interest and raised questions about financial transparency among high-profile celebrities.
According to a circular issued by Tax Zone-12 on 15 June, the accounts of 25 individuals were ordered frozen for failing to meet their tax obligations. Among the prominent names listed are celebrated film actress Arifa Parvin Moushumi, popular actor Bapparaj, actress and singer Nusraat Faria, and television star Sabila Noor.
Letters informing the individuals of the enforcement measure have already been sent to their respective addresses. The decision, officials say, came after repeated notices and reminders to clear outstanding tax dues were ignored by many of those on the list.
Rumours regarding the account freeze had been circulating on social media since early Sunday. These were later confirmed by NBR sources, who stated that the enforcement was part of an ongoing effort to improve tax compliance, particularly among high-earning public figures.
A senior tax official involved in the process told reporters on condition of anonymity that some individuals on the list have already responded by paying off their dues or applying for an extension. “We’re not targeting anyone unfairly. The accounts will be unfrozen as soon as the tax liabilities are cleared,” the official added.
In addition to the four celebrities named above, veteran actor Ahmed Sharif and actress Nusrat Yasmin Tisha are also reportedly among those listed in the NBR’s action. However, the full list of 25 names has not been made public as of yet.
The NBR has clarified that the freezing of bank accounts is a temporary administrative step under existing tax laws and is intended to compel defaulters to comply. The agency also emphasised that this measure is part of a broader campaign to increase revenue collection and strengthen financial discipline across all sectors, including media and entertainment.
Tax experts have noted that this move could serve as a wake-up call for many high-income earners who do not properly declare their earnings or delay their tax payments. They also believe such actions signal the NBR’s growing resolve to bring all eligible citizens under the tax net, regardless of their social status or public influence.
So far, none of the celebrities named have issued public statements in response to the action. However, industry insiders say the incident has sparked concern among many in the showbiz community about potential follow-up investigations or audits.
As the NBR continues to intensify its drive against tax evasion, more high-profile figures may face similar scrutiny in the coming months.
