Anti-drug drive at Kuakata hotel, 7 youths sentenced to prison

Seven sentenced to prison in Kuakata anti-drug drive



Patuakhali: A mobile court conducted a raid at a residential hotel in Kuakata, Patuakhali and arrested 7 youths along with narcotics. Later, the detainees were given various terms of imprisonment and fines.

The operation was conducted at the residential hotel 'Sea Adventure Inn' in Kuakata on Thursday (June 18 at around 2 am). The operation was led by Executive Magistrate and Kalapara Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Yasin Sadek and Kalapara Narcotics Control Department.

During the operation, 25 pieces of yaba, 50 grams of marijuana and 1 whiskey were seized from the accused youths. Later, a mobile court conducted them and sentenced them under Section 42 (1) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.

The convicts are: Md. Arif Bepari (22) of Khajura village in Latachapoli union of Mahipur police station, Md. Hasan Mridha (23) of Tulatoli area of Kuakata, Nirab Pramanik (21) of Muradpur village in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari, Md. Sayed Islam (20), Md. Hasibul Islam (19), Md. Bappi (19) of Bipinpur village in Mahipur Sadar union and Md. Billal (22) of Kachua area in Kathalia upazila of Jhalakathi.

Two of them were sentenced to three months' imprisonment and a fine of Tk 100, in default of which they will be sentenced to another 15 days' imprisonment. The other five were sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and a fine of Tk 100, in default of which they will be sentenced to another three days' imprisonment.

Executive Magistrate Md. Yasin Sadek said, "This legal action has been taken against them on specific charges of drug use and possession. Our campaign against drugs will continue to keep the tourist city of Kuakata drug-free." - Gofran Palash
