Fugitive convict Jamal of Hallmark Group sent to jail

A Dhaka court today sent Md Jamal Uddin Sarkar, Chairman of Tetuljhora Union Parishad of Hemayetpur, Savar, to jail after rejecting his bail appeal in Hallmark embezzlement case on March 19.

Sarker surrendered before the court of Judge M. Abul Kashem of Dhaka Special Judge Court-1 and applied for bail on Sunday morning.

On March 19, nine persons including Hallmark Group MD and Chairman were awarded different terms of imprisonment over the Hallmark embezzlement case.

Sarker, who was on bail, appeared before the court that day.

The court sentenced him to seven years in two separate sections. After hearing the sentence, he somehow managed to leave the court premises and went on a run.

Later, the court canceled his bail and issued an arrest warrant against him.

The ACC filed the case on October 4, 2012, with the capital’s Ramna Police Station.

According to the case documents, the 18 accused, including Hallmark Group Managing Director Md Tanvir Mahmud and his wife and Company Chairman Jasmine Islam, are accused of embezzling Taka 16.50 crore after taking loan of 525.62 crore in the name of a non-existent Max Spinning Mills Limited. - Special Correspondent
