A court in Jashore on Tuesday sentenced private tutor Mashrur Rahman Sajib to life imprisonment for raping a college student on the promise of marriage.

Justice  Ataur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 handed down the verdict, also fining him Tk 25,000, with three months’ additional jail in default.

Special Public Prosecutor Abdul Latif Lota confirmed the matter.

According to the case statement, Sajib, son of Mizanur Rahman of Palbari Tetultola area, raped his student at her house in Jashore on June 15, 2016, when she was alone and later he maintained a physical relationship with her under false promises of marriage, secretly recording photos and videos.

When the victim pressed for marriage, Sajib cut off communication.

In July 2024, his family informed the victim that Sajib had already married elsewhere.

After police refused to take her complaint on August 3, 2024, she filed a case with the tribunal on August 17, 2024.

Following an investigation that confirmed the allegations, the tribunal delivered the conviction and Sajib was sent to jail, reports UNB.
