DB Chief Rezaul Karim Mallick confirmed the arrest to media on Thursday evening. According to a statement from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Shaon was taken to the DB office for questioning following her arrest in Dhanmondi.
The arrest came just hours after her ancestral home in Jamalpur was attacked and set on fire. Reports indicate that students and locals torched the house near Norundi Railway Station in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila around 6:00 PM.
The house belonged to Shaon's father, Engineer Mohammad Ali, an Awami League nomination seeker for the Jamalpur-4 (Sadar) constituency in the 12th national election. Her mother, Begum Tahura Ali, previously served two terms as a Member of Parliament from a reserved women's seat (1996-2001 and 2009-2014).
In the most recent general election, Shaon also sought a parliamentary seat under the reserved women's quota as an Awami League candidate.
