Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the brutal killing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin, who was hacked to death in public near the Chourasta area of Gazipur city.
According to Gazipur Metropolitan Police, the arrests were made during multiple raids conducted across the city starting early Friday (August 8). The detainees were picked up from different locations, but their identities have yet to be disclosed.
Md Shaheen Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Basan Police Station, confirmed the arrests and said the investigation is ongoing. "The accused were arrested from separate areas of Gazipur. Their connection to the incident is being thoroughly examined," he said.
The fatal attack took place around 7pm on Thursday, drawing widespread outrage among local journalists. On Friday afternoon, reporters in Gazipur formed a human chain, demanding swift justice and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Tuhin, a staff reporter with Dainik Protidiner Kagoj, was reportedly attacked while filming a public altercation near Chourasta between a man and a woman. The group of assailants—allegedly known to the woman—initially attacked the man, identified as 35-year-old Badsha Mia, who is now undergoing treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.
When Tuhin began recording the scene on his mobile phone, the attackers confronted him and demanded he delete the footage. According to CCTV evidence and police reports, the attackers turned on Tuhin after he either refused or denied filming. He was then fatally hacked in broad daylight.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Rabiul Islam confirmed the sequence of events based on CCTV footage.
A murder case was filed on Thursday night by the victim’s brother, Md Selim, naming 20 to 25 unidentified individuals.
Tuhin hailed from Bhatipara village in Fulbaria upazila of Mymensingh and had been living with his family in the Chourasta area of Gazipur.
In a separate but related incident, two individuals have been detained for allegedly assaulting another journalist, Anwar Hossain Sourav of Dainik Bangladesh-er Alo. He was reportedly attacked in front of police officers on Wednesday, apparently in connection with reports related to extortion.
