A Dhaka court on Monday fixed 15 January for a hearing on whether to take cognisance of the charge-sheet filed in the murder case of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order after the complainant, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, sought time to review the charge-sheet.

Earlier, on 6 January, the investigating officer, Inspector Foysal Ahmed of the Detective Branch, submitted the charge-sheet against 17 accused, listing 77 witnesses. The court received the charge-sheet on 7 January and issued a notice the following day, asking the complainant to appear and state whether there were any objections to it.

So far, 11 of the accused have been arrested and are currently in jail, while six others, including the alleged shooter Faisal Karim Masud, remain at large.

Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and a prospective independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency, was shot and critically injured on 12 December on Box Culvert Road under Paltan Model Police Station.

Investigators later said CCTV footage showed that while Hadi and an associate were travelling in a battery-operated auto-rickshaw, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on him with intent to kill.

Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to a private hospital. On 15 December, he was taken to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he later died.

Following the attack, Abdullah Al Jaber filed an attempted murder case with Paltan Model Police Station on 14 December. The case was later converted into a murder case after Hadi’s death.
