Deep depression over Bay intensifies into Cyclone Hamoon

Dhaka, Oct 23 – The deep depression over west-central Bay and adjoining area moved north-northeastwards and intensified into a cyclonic storm.

Named Cyclone Hamoon, it now lies over west central Bay and adjoining northwest Bay and was centred at 06pm today about 670 kms west-southwest of Chattogram port, 630 kms west-southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 540 kms southwest of Mongla port and 540 kms southwest of Payra port, according to the special bulletin by Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

It is likely to move north-northeastwards and intensify further, reads the bulletin.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 km of the cyclone centre is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts/squalls.

Sea will remain very rough near the cyclone centre, according to the bulletin.

Under the peripheral effect of the cyclone, heavy to very heavy rainfall with gusty or squally wind may occur over north bay and coastal areas of Bangladesh, BMD predicted.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to hoist local warning signal no 4.

Meanwhile, all fishing boats and trawlers over north bay and deep sea have been advised to take shelter immediately, the special bulletin reads.

According to BMD, light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty and squally wind is likely to occur in the next 24 hours at most places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions, and at many places over Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over southern part of the country

Day and night temperatures may fall by 1-3 degree Celsius over the country, according to the BMD bulletin. - UNB
