European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with Bangladesh and exploring new opportunities for partnership, including the potential for a Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.

In a recent letter to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, von der Leyen expressed the EU's readiness to support Bangladesh’s reform efforts, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful, inclusive process that upholds democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law. She also stressed the need for transparent, inclusive, and credible elections.

“I commend your dedication to sustainable development, the green transition, anti-corruption efforts, and the digitalization of financial systems,” the letter stated.

The European Commission President noted that the EU is already actively engaging with Bangladesh on these fronts and looks forward to further strengthening the partnership. “We are eager to continue our collaboration and explore new avenues, including the potential for a Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement,” she wrote.

Von der Leyen also highlighted the potential for EU investments under the Global Gateway initiative, which could support projects in critical sectors such as secure connectivity, climate adaptation, health, digital infrastructure, and energy. “There is significant opportunity to invest in secure, reliable networks and connectivity, including railways, water resources, and energy infrastructure,” she added.

In parallel, von der Leyen emphasized the EU's ongoing work with Bangladesh’s government to enhance the capacity of key institutions. She expressed the EU's intent to maximize the impact of its support by integrating technical assistance that will aid in policy development and promote effective governance, drawing on the EU’s extensive experience in these areas.

Reflecting on their previous meeting at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2024, von der Leyen expressed her appreciation for the productive discussions and renewed her commitment to deepening the EU-Bangladesh relationship.
