Japan will provide five patrol vessels to Bangladesh to assist in securing its coastal areas. The announcement was made during a courtesy meeting between newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, SAIDA Shinichi, and Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs this morning, according to a press release.

The Ambassador also expressed Japan's readiness to sign an agreement to provide equipment for air pollution monitoring in Bangladesh.

During the discussion, the Ambassador reaffirmed Japan's strong support for Bangladesh’s interim government and mentioned an upcoming visit by a Parliamentary Vice Minister to officially convey this political backing. He also emphasized the need for Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) and regular high-level exchanges between the two nations.

The Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the ongoing negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and shared that the Chief of JICA is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in March 2025.

Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain thanked Japan for its continued support, particularly for Bangladesh’s interim government, and acknowledged Japan as the country’s largest bilateral development partner. He also praised Japan's contributions to major development projects in Bangladesh and assured that Japanese investments would remain secure.

Hossain expressed gratitude for Japan's efforts in addressing the Rohingya crisis, including its humanitarian assistance to the displaced Rohingyas, especially those relocated to Bhashan Char. He also sought Japan’s support for the upcoming conference on the Rohingya crisis, set to be held in Doha in collaboration with the United Nations.

Both sides discussed further bilateral cooperation and mutual support in election matters on the international stage. The Foreign Adviser expressed his hope that Bangladesh-Japan relations would reach new heights during his tenure.
