Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today urged Uruguay to leverage sports and people-to-people connections as a means to foster greater bilateral engagement, which could open up new avenues for cooperation in various fields, including trade and business.

Professor Yunus made the remarks during a courtesy meeting with non-resident Uruguay Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alberto A. Guani, at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.

Ambassador Guani noted that while Uruguay and Bangladesh have many untapped areas of potential cooperation, there is a tremendous opportunity to explore mutual benefits. “It’s commendable that Bangladesh is a global pioneer in social business,” he remarked.

While Uruguay currently exports wool, soybeans, and other agricultural products to Bangladesh, the trade volume, although still modest, has seen impressive double-digit growth in recent years.

The Ambassador identified several sectors ripe for collaboration, including agriculture, manufacturing, semiconductors, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), satellites, and specialized technology transfer in IT. He also stressed the importance of enhancing connectivity between Bangladesh and South America, emphasizing the need to bridge the distance between the two nations.

Drawing attention to the shared passion for sports, especially football, both countries enjoy, Chief Adviser Yunus stated, “Sports offer a unique opportunity to connect our nations. Let’s use this common interest as a stepping stone to build deeper cooperation in other areas as well.”

The Chief Adviser also encouraged the Ambassador to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh and promote them back in Uruguay. He expressed interest in Uruguay’s leadership in renewable energy and clean technologies, proposing that both nations work together to advance in these fields.

Professor Yunus further suggested that Bangladesh and Uruguay could maximize their competitive advantages by fostering human resource exchange—Bangladesh offering a young and dynamic workforce and Uruguay providing advanced technology and expertise.

The Chief Adviser also recommended that Ambassador Guani engage with relevant authorities, including the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), to expedite the growth of bilateral cooperation.

Present at the meeting were Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs, along with officials from the Chief Adviser’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
