This announcement came after a productive meeting between Hossain and Italy's Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They discussed a range of mutual interests, focusing on expanding bilateral cooperation in various sectors.
On migration, both parties lauded the contributions of the Bangladeshi diaspora in Italy to both economies. They underscored the importance of expanding legal migration channels while committing to joint efforts to combat irregular migration, human trafficking, and the exploitation of migrants. In response to the Foreign Adviser’s concerns over delays in visa applications for Bangladeshi workers, Tripodi assured that the Italian authorities would expedite the processing of long-pending applications.
Reflecting on the strong bilateral ties since 1972, Vice Minister Tripodi reiterated Italy’s steadfast support for Bangladesh’s interim government and praised its ongoing reforms aimed at fostering a peaceful and prosperous nation. She expressed satisfaction with the current trade relations, emphasizing a desire to expand cooperation, particularly in the textile and defence sectors. Tripodi also noted Italy’s commitment to increasing investments, especially in greenfield sectors, building on the robust economic partnership between the two nations.
Foreign Adviser Hossain highlighted Bangladesh's proactive efforts to create a favorable business environment, noting that the government and the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) are working tirelessly to streamline processes for foreign investors.
Tripodi also commended Bangladesh’s generous hosting of Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, reaffirming Italy’s continued political and humanitarian support. Addressing the complex situation in Myanmar, where non-state actors have gained control in bordering areas, Hossain expressed grave concern and emphasized that the sustainable return of the Rohingyas to their homeland remains the only viable solution.
The two-day visit by Italy’s Vice Minister Tripodi is the first ministerial visit from any EU country since the formation of Bangladesh’s interim government, marking a significant step in the strengthening of bilateral ties.
Upon her arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, Tripodi was warmly received by Abul Hasan Mridha, Director General (West Europe and EU) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
