“We are confident in your success with these reforms. As Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni conveyed to you at the UNGA, you can always rely on our support,” Tripodi stated, emphasizing Italy's commitment to Bangladesh’s transition.
Highlighting the strong ties between Italy and Bangladesh, Tripodi noted, “Our two countries share a deep bond. Many Bangladeshi citizens contribute significantly to our society, and they are an integral part of Italy’s fabric.” She also encouraged closer cooperation in addressing illegal migration, a growing concern for both nations.
In response, Chief Adviser Yunus stressed the importance of expanding legal migration channels. “We are focused on curbing human trafficking and fostering more formal channels for sending skilled workers abroad,” he explained.
Professor Yunus also acknowledged the significance of Tripodi’s visit at a pivotal moment in Bangladesh's history. “Your visit comes at a crucial time, following the events of July, when the nation’s political landscape underwent significant changes,” he noted, referring to the student-led uprising that catalyzed reforms and ended years of political turmoil.
“We are confronting many challenges, but we are committed to revitalizing the economy and restoring confidence in our political system,” he added.
Tripodi responded with reassurance, pledging Italy’s continued support, both politically and economically. “Bangladesh can count on Italy for full backing in its efforts to move forward,” she affirmed.
The Vice Minister also highlighted Italy's ongoing commitment to development assistance for Bangladesh, including support for the Rohingya community. She further revealed that several Italian companies were interested in exploring investment opportunities in Bangladesh, particularly in the textile, energy, and defense sectors.
Chief Adviser Yunus took the opportunity to call on Italy to consider relocating its factories to Bangladesh, underscoring the potential for stronger economic ties. He also suggested fostering youth engagement through exchange programs between the two nations.
Tripodi’s visit marks the first ministerial visit from any European Union country since the formation of Bangladesh’s Interim Government in August 2024, signaling a strong commitment to bilateral relations.
Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary for SDG affairs, and other officials also attended the meeting.
