The interim government announced on Monday that Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus' recent visit to China has opened a new chapter in bilateral relations, with high-level discussions and agreements aimed at fostering mutual benefits in key areas. Yunus' visit, which was highlighted by a warm reception and recognition from President Xi Jinping, has set the stage for enhanced cooperation between the two nations.
Bangladesh's High Representative to the Chief Adviser, Khalilur Rahman, and the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Chowdhury Ashik, briefed the media at the Foreign Service Academy. Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam was also present.
"We are deeply inspired by the level of respect and honor shown to Dr. Yunus and the delegation," said Khalilur Rahman, highlighting the significance of the diplomatic engagement and the promising future of China-Bangladesh relations.
A major highlight of the visit was the invitation for Chinese companies to participate in Bangladesh’s Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), with the Chinese delegation expressing a positive approach toward this initiative.
The two nations also discussed collaborative efforts to address the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, with Bangladesh lauding China’s proactive role in facilitating peace talks. The Chinese government expressed its appreciation for Bangladesh’s efforts in aiding displaced people from Myanmar’s Rakhine State and pledged continued support for their repatriation.
Strengthening Investment Ties
BIDA Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik shared that the visit was a crucial step in advancing mutual economic interests. During the visit, over 100 Chinese companies were engaged, with Ashik presenting Bangladesh as a prime investment destination. He highlighted recent reforms aimed at improving the investment climate in Bangladesh, encouraging Chinese businesses to seize the opportunities the country offers.
The two sides signed agreements covering a broad range of sectors, including Economic and Technical Cooperation, cultural heritage exchanges, media cooperation, sports, and health. These agreements are set to strengthen ties across multiple domains, benefiting both countries.
Invitation for Greater Engagement
During the visit, Dr. Yunus expressed his heartfelt gratitude to President Xi and the Chinese people for their warm hospitality. He extended an invitation for President Xi to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time, further cementing the partnership between the two nations.
Commemorating 50 Years of Diplomatic Relations
This visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh. Both sides agreed that despite shifting international dynamics, the relationship between the two countries has remained strong and stable. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which guide their diplomatic engagement.
China reiterated its respect for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and its non-interference policy, supporting Bangladesh’s independence and territorial integrity. The Chinese government expressed its continued support for Bangladesh’s development path and stability, underlining its commitment to fostering peace and prosperity in the region.
Looking Ahead: Promising Future for Bangladesh-China Relations
The visit, which included Dr. Yunus’ participation in the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2025 in Hainan, marked an important milestone. Following his attendance at the forum, Dr. Yunus met President Xi Jinping in Beijing on March 28. President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Bangladesh, ensuring continued progress and development for both nations.
The high-level engagements during the visit have set the stage for deeper collaboration, with both countries poised to reap the benefits of a strengthened partnership in the years to come.
