Bangladesh and Russia reaffirmed their strong bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in energy and science at a Russia Day reception hosted by the Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Sunday evening.

Russian Ambassador Alexander V. Mantytskiy highlighted the progress of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, a joint initiative symbolizing the nations’ partnership in energy security and technological advancement. He noted that the plant’s first unit is expected to be operational by the end of this year.

Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Adviser for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, attended as chief guest and expressed optimism about further collaboration, especially in energy and agriculture.

The event drew diplomats, business leaders, academics, and cultural figures. It featured a historical exhibition and a performance by the Moscow Russian Song Ensemble, supported by Rosatom, the implementing agency of the Rooppur plant.

Ambassador Mantytskiy also marked 2025 as the 80th anniversary of Russia’s atomic industry and underscored Russia’s emphasis on a cooperative Eurasian security framework. He acknowledged Bangladesh’s important role in regional bodies such as SAARC, BIMSTEC, and IORA.

With annual trade exceeding $2 billion, Bangladesh stands as Russia’s second-largest trade partner in South Asia. Key exports include wheat and fertilizer, and Russian company Gazprom remains active in Bangladesh’s energy exploration, especially on Bhola Island.

The ambassador concluded by celebrating Russia’s cultural heritage, emphasizing its global contributions to literature, ballet, and the arts.
