UN team lauds govt action on enforced disappearances
A visiting United Nations delegation has commended the interim government of Bangladesh for its significant steps to combat enforced disappearances.
The UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) welcomed Bangladesh’s recent accession to the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED). The delegation also praised the efforts and commitment of the newly formed Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Enforced Disappearances.
WGEID Vice-Chairperson Grażyna Baranowska and member Ana Lorena Delgadillo Perez met Acting Foreign Secretary Md Ruhul Alam Siddique on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during their study visit to Bangladesh from June 15 to 19.
The UN team expressed interest in exploring how its mandate could further assist Bangladesh in preventing and addressing cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances.
The Acting Foreign Secretary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice for victims. He welcomed continued technical support and cooperation from the Working Group to strengthen national efforts in this area.
