A preliminary magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck southern Panama on Monday evening, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), with no immediate reports of casualties or property damage.

The earthquake occurred at around 6:20pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres (6 miles), about 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of Río Grande in southern Panama.

The latest tremor followed two powerful earthquakes measuring magnitudes 7.7 and 6.6 that struck the region on Friday afternoon, along with a series of aftershocks.

The earlier earthquakes caused buildings near the epicentre to collapse and prompted evacuations across the country.
