Dhaka, Nov 22 – The third mild earthquake, considered an aftershock of Friday’s powerful tremor, was felt in parts of Narsingdi and nearby districts on Saturday evening, heightening concern among residents.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the latest quake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:06 pm (local time). Its epicenter was located 11 kilometres west of Narsingdi at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Earlier in the morning, another aftershock was felt in Narsingdi's Palash upazila.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the quake, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 10:36 am. Its epicentre was located about 29 km west of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon.

Two mild earthquakes shook Dhaka on Saturday evening, causing panic among residents just a day after a powerful nationwide tremor left several people dead and hundreds injured. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department confirmed that both of Saturday’s quakes had their epicentres in the capital’s Badda area.

Meteorologist Tariful Newaz Kabir said the twin quakes occurred almost simultaneously. The first tremor, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 6:06:04pm. Just one second later, at 6:06:05pm, a second, stronger tremor measuring 4.3 followed. Both originated from a shallow depth beneath Badda, making them more sharply felt despite their relatively low magnitudes.

However, no damage or casualties were reported, officials said.

Friday’s 5.7-magnitude earthquake, which hit several parts of Bangladesh, left at least 10 people dead and dozens injured.

Of the deaths, four were reported in Dhaka, five in Narsingdi — the epicentre — and one in Narayanganj. - UNB
