The government has approved the purchase of two bulk carrier ships, each with a capacity between 55,000 and 66,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), from the US-based company Hellenic Dry Bulk Ventures LLC. The total cost is $76.7 million (approximately Tk 9.36 billion).
The decision was taken during a Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) meeting held on Tuesday at the Secretariat in Dhaka, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
The acquisition falls under the project titled “Procurement of Two Bulk Carrier Ships of 55,000–66,000 DWT Each.”
The tender process involved a one-stage, two-envelope bidding system. Out of three bidders, two met the technical requirements, and the US firm was selected as the lowest responsive bidder.
The ships will be purchased using funds from the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation.
In a separate meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, also chaired by Dr. Ahmed, the government approved the continuation of the World Bank-funded “Bangladesh Regional Inland Water Transport Project-1.” This project includes dredging of the Chattogram–Dhaka–Ashuganj waterways and the construction of terminals and related facilities.
