UZ : UP member jailed, another held for obstructing voters



Chuadanga, May 08 - A Union Parishad (UP) member was jailed and another was arrested for obstructing voters from entering polling stations in Damurhuda and Jibannagar upazilas of Chuadanga as voting for the first phase of the 6th Upazila Parishad Election is underway across 139 upazilas on Wednesday.

Abu Siddik is member of ward no. 2 under Kurargachhi union parishad in Damurhuda upazila while the arrestee Shakhawat Hossain is a supporter of Jibannagar upazila chairman candidate Hafizur Rahman.

Jakia Sultana, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Damurhuda-Jibannagar circle, said they arrested UP member Abu Siddik, who was working for chairman candidate Ali Mansur Babul, for barring voters from entering Chandipur Government Primary School centre in the morning.

Later, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner Saiful Islam sentenced him to seven days in jail, said the police officer.

She said the law enforcers also arrested Shakhawat for restricting voters from casting votes at Katapole Government Primary School centre in Jibannagar upazila in the morning.

The arrestee was taken to the concerned police station and legal actions against him were underway, the ASP said.

Deputy commissioner Dr. Kissinger Chakma said they were constantly monitoring the situation and voting was underway peacefully.

In Damurhuda, three candidates are contesting for the post of chairman while 2,47,820 voters are expected to cast their votes.

In Jibannagar, two chairman candidates are contesting with votes from 1,53,215 voters.-UNB
