The number of unemployed people in Bangladesh rose by 5.6% between April and June of this year, bringing the total to 2.64 million.

According to a report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, there were 2.5 million unemployed people in the second quarter of 2023. The unemployment rate climbed to 3.65% during this period, up from 3.41% in the same quarter last year.

The report highlighted that the increase in unemployment was mainly due to a rise in joblessness among men. However, the employment rate for women showed improvement during the April-June quarter.

Additionally, the number of people outside the labor force grew to 49.5 million during this period, representing a 4.6% increase compared to the previous year.

Labor force participation also declined, dropping to 59.3% in the second quarter of this year, down from 60.7% in the same period last year.
