Chinese Netizens Mock US Tariffs on Social Media

As Beijing prepares to officially respond to the latest round of US tariffs, Chinese state media and netizens have taken to social media to mock the move, turning it into a trending topic.

On Sina Weibo, a hashtag reading, “The US is fighting a trade war while asking for more eggs,” has gone viral. The phrase, popularized by China’s state broadcaster CCTV, points out the irony of the US asking for assistance from allies to import eggs amid a shortage caused by avian flu.

Egg prices became a significant point of discussion during last year’s US presidential election, with then-candidate Trump promising to lower living costs.

One Weibo user quipped, “Shooting oneself in the foot can be seen as retribution. Not only are eggs expensive, but food, clothing, and other daily necessities are also soaring in price.” Another user humorously added, “Haha, such a big country can’t even secure basic eggs.”

The social media reactions reflect growing frustrations and irony over the ongoing trade tensions between the US and China, which continue to impact both countries’ economies.
