Iraq exported around 10 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz in April, newly appointed Oil Minister Basim Mohammed said on Friday.

Speaking at a news conference, the minister said Iraq is seeking closer engagement with Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to increase the country’s oil production and export capacity.

Mohammed said Baghdad aims to raise its production capacity to five million barrels per day as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s energy sector and expand its role in global oil markets.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes, carrying a significant share of global crude oil exports. Growing tensions in the Middle East have recently heightened concerns over the security of energy supplies passing through the corridor.
