Dhaka, June 10 – More than 9.1 million animals were sacrificed nationwide during this year’s Eid-ul-Azha, authorities said on Tuesday.

This year, a total of 91,36,734 animals were sacrificed across the country. Of these, 47,05,106 were cows and buffaloes, 44,30,668  goats and sheep, and 960 belonged to other categories, said a press release from the Department of Livestock Services.

It added that 33,10,603 animals remained unsold during the festival. The department explained that the high supply of sacrificial animals this year caused this unsold stock, which is not unusual.

An analysis of the data by the department revealed that Sylhet division recorded the lowest number of sacrificial animals, with 3,19,823. Mymensingh followed with 3,83,162.

On the other hand, Rajshahi division saw the highest number of sacrifices, with 23,24,971 animals. This was followed by Dhaka division with 21,85,040, Chattogram with 17,53,732, and Khulna with 8,04,224 animals sacrificed.

Barishal division recorded 4,00,783, and Rangpur saw 9,64,999 animals sacrificed.- UNB
