3 villages in Rangamati’s Baghaichari flooded
Rangamati, May 28 - Three villages in Baghaichari upazila of Rangamati district have been flooded due to onrush of hill water and heavy rainfall triggered by cyclonic storm Remal that made landfall in Bangladesh coast on Sunday night.
Landslides occurred in ten places in the upazila, disrupting communication on Marishya-Dighinala road.
However, no one was injured during the landslides.
A number of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road due to the landslides.
Meanwhile, 120 tourists were stranded in the Sajek area of the district as the Machalong and Baghaihat Bazar were inundated by upstream water.
Shirin Akter, Baghaichari Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said due to excessive rainfall, landslides occurred in different parts of the upazila and the low-lying areas were flooded.
The work of removing the soil from the road started in coordination with the Roads and Highways Department and the local administration and the work is being delayed due to rains, she added.
Besides, the low-lying areas of Baghaichari upazila were submerged as the Kachalong River water is flowing above its danger level.
Ishtiak Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Baghaichari police station, said a team of police visited the spot and tried to remove soil from the road.
It might take two days to resume communication in the upazila, he added.-UNB
