Interim Govt Condemns Custodial Torture, Orders Investigation
The interim government has called for an urgent investigation into the death of Touhidul Islam, following his arrest by security forces on Friday. Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, confirmed the investigation in a statement on Saturday.
Touhidul was taken to a Cumilla hospital late Friday night with injuries allegedly inflicted by security forces after his arrest earlier that day based on complaints against him.
The government, led by Prof. Muhammad Yunus, has strongly condemned any form of custodial torture or murder, Azad stated. "Upholding human rights is a central mission of this government, which includes some of the nation’s leading human rights activists," he added.
In an effort to address such abuses, the interim government has set up multiple commissions aimed at reforming the criminal justice system. Several of these commissions have already submitted their reports.
Azad emphasized that the government is committed to holding constructive discussions with political parties about these reports and enacting reforms to prevent human rights violations in police interrogations, crime management, and judicial procedures.
