Donald Trump has said he may consider running for prime minister of Israel after completing his current work.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday (May 20) before a U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduation ceremony, Trump claimed he enjoys strong popularity in Israel.
“I might go to Israel and run for prime minister after I finish this job,” he said, adding that he had seen a poll that showed “99 percent support,” though he did not specify the source.
The White House did not immediately comment on his remarks.
Trump also expressed strong support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has been in office through multiple terms since 1996. He described Netanyahu as a “wartime prime minister” and said he believed he was not receiving enough recognition.
When asked about ongoing tensions involving Iran, Trump said Netanyahu was “doing well” and added that the Israeli leader would follow his position on key decisions.
In recent comments, Trump has also referred to possible military escalation against Iran, while earlier suggesting he had paused action due to progress in diplomatic discussions.
