A Bangladeshi Person with Disability Mr. Abdus Sattar Dulal, Founder and Executive Director of Bangladesh Protibandhi Kallyan Somity (BPKS) has unanimously been elected Vice Chairperson in the Disabled People International Asia Pacific Regional Council Meeting (DPIAPRCM) at Seoul Korea last week and he is responsible for DPI South Asia as Chairperson.
The DPIAPR Chairperson elected was Mr. Young Seok Lee from the DPI-Korea, Vice Chairpersons Ms. Midori Hirano from DPI- Japan, Mr. Wong Yoon Loong from Malaysia Confederation of the Disabled (Malaysia), Mr. Norman Yulian from Perkumpulan Penyandang Disabilities Indonesia (Indonesia) and Regional Secretary Mr. Muhammad Shafiq Ur Rehman from Milestone (Pakistan). The meeting was assisted by Regional Development Officer (Non-elected position) Mr. Taisuke Miyamoto.
In DPIAPRC meeting future strategy that contribute to implement the CRPD and the Jakarta Declaration with harmonization of domestic legislations with the CRPD, empowering and building capacity of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and their participation at all level, accessibility, promote PwDs in business sector, increased awareness on universal design and intersectionality in every field. Meeting concluded by regional assembly on 5th September 2024 where Mr. Dulal declared hosting the DPI World Assembly in Korea on behalf of council.
The Disabled People International (DPI) was established in 1981. Since its inception, DPI has contributed to the advancement of the rights and development of people with disabilities across the world. Thereafter,
DPI was granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and was also played a significant role in the development and subsequent adoption of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). DPI is recognized that all people are entitled to human rights and fundamental freedoms, sustainable development is possible only in an open and nondiscriminatory society. DPI also recognized economic, medical and social developments that have occurred in both developed and developing societies need sufficient improvement the status of PwDs. The organizations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) continue to struggle to have their voices heard and are under-represented in decision-making, political and nonpolitical participation and resource distribution processes at local, national and international levels.
The DPI work continue to obtain justice through equalization of opportunities for all types of PwDs through the development and support of their organizations.
Mr. Dulal is a distinguished expert and continued pioneering role worldwide last 44 years in promotion of rights and development of PwDs. Additionally, he attends as keynote speaker in the UNCRPD Training to South Asian Countries for implementing New Decade (2023-2032) of Jakarta Declaration in Asia Pacific Region.
The events were organized from 2-5 September 2024 by Disabled Peoples’ International Korea (DPI Korea), DPI Asia Pacific (DPIAP), Asia Pacific Disabled People’s Organizations United (APDPO United), and Asia Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) at the Eroom Center and Sheraton Hotel Seoul, the Republic of Korea.
