French President Emmanuel Macron said Friday he welcomed a call by Donald Trump for a ceasefire in Ukraine, after speaking with the US president.

"I spoke several times last night with @POTUS. I commend his strong call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire," Macron said on X.

"We must all work towards this goal without delay, false pretences, or dilatory tactics."

Trump on Thursday called for such a ceasefire on his Truth Social network after speaking to Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ukraine had already expressed its support for a ceasefire "nearly two months ago", Macron said. "I now expect Russia to do the same."

Should the Kremlin fail to do so, "we are ready to respond firmly, together with all Europeans and in close coordination with the United States," Macron warned.

Earlier Friday, Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said a group of northern European nations and Britain also supported the US proposal, reports BSS.

"We need a ceasefire, an unconditional ceasefire, first," he told reporters in Oslo on the sidelines of a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), which groups together the UK with other northern European nations in a military coalition.
