An extraordinary general meeting of the National Press Club was held on Friday 22 Dec 2023.

Jatiya Press Club members on Friday demanded that the metro rail station be renamed as 'National Press Club Station' immediately instead of Bangladesh Secretariat Station. They urged the club's management committee to take immediate action in this regard. At an extraordinary general meeting of the National Press Club, they said that the infrastructure of the National Press Club was severely damaged during the construction of the metro rail. The members of the press club expressed strong resentment as the name of the station was not named after the press club despite repeated demands.

President of the club Farida Yasmin presided over the function. After recitation from the Holy Quran, Gita, Tripitak and Bible, Joint Secretary of the Club Ayub Bhuiyan read out the minutes of the bi-annual general meeting of the club held on December 30, 2022.

Later, General Secretary Shyamal Dutta and Treasurer Shahed Chowdhury submitted their respective reports. Senior Vice President Hasan Hafiz and Joint Secretary Md. Ashraf Ali were also present on the dais.

A total of 15 members took part in the discussion on the report. They are Saiful Alam, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Md Omar Faruk, Tarun Tapan Chakraborty, Syed Shahnewaz Karim, Ummul Wara Sweety, Khairul Alam, Rafiq Ahmed Mufdi (Mufdi Ahmed), Md Siddiqur Rahman, AKM Mohsin, Akter Hossain, Delwar Hasan, Sayeed Tarek, Nazmul Haque Sarker and Monir Hossain Liton.

In the discussion, the members gave various suggestions including providing new membership, improving the quality of food in the canteen, bringing all members of the club under the welfare fund and increasing the health services of the members. President Farida Yasmin assured to actively consider all the proposals and implement them gradually.

He urged the government to ensure security of journalists while discharging their professional duties during the upcoming parliamentary elections. At the same time, she said killing innocent people, including mothers and children, by torching trains and buses could not be the work of any civilized and democratic society.

It is to be noted that the Press Club is a historical landmark of Dhaka city. People from all over the country, including Dhaka, have been calling this bus, rickshaw auto rickshaw stand by this name for the last 61 years. The metro station has been constructed on Topkhana Road in front of the National Press Club. On the other hand, the Bangladesh Secretariat is located at Nawab Abdul Gani Road. Therefore, although the Bangladesh Secretariat was announced in the metro rail trains, the passengers call this place as the Press Club.
