The government is considering introducing a hybrid system of online and in-person classes at the school level in response to the ongoing global energy crisis, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Prime Minister Tareque Rahman at the Secretariat, the minister said a proposal would be placed before the Cabinet, with a final decision to be taken after discussions.

“The global crisis is not affecting Bangladesh alone, and we do not know how long it will continue. That is why we are considering bringing parts of the school system online and adopting a blended model,” he said.

Milon said the academic calendar had already been disrupted by Ramadan holidays and other interruptions, prompting the government to explore alternative ways to minimise learning losses.

“Classes were previously held five days a week. But many sessions have already been lost, so we are considering extending school activities to six days a week,” he said.

He added that the government is also examining the possibility of holding online classes at certain times to cope with the impact of the international fuel crisis.

The minister said a recent survey found that around 85 percent of respondents were in favour of online learning options. However, he warned that a complete shift to virtual education could lead to social isolation among students.

"That is why we are thinking of a balanced approach,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Milon and State Minister for Mass Education Bobby Hajja met the Prime Minister at the Secretariat.
