An AI-powered automatic fine system has been introduced on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway to strengthen traffic discipline and improve road safety.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said traffic violations such as speeding, driving on the wrong side and dangerous or prohibited overtaking would now be automatically detected and fined through AI-enabled cameras.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while inaugurating the new AI camera-based “Auto Fine System” at the Highway Police Command and Control Monitoring Centre in Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj.

The minister said the Highway Police has taken a major initiative to bring the Dhaka-Chattogram highway under technology-based surveillance. A total of 1,427 AI cameras have already been installed along the highway from Dhaka to Chattogram.

The cameras will automatically detect vehicles exceeding the prescribed speed limit, violating traffic rules, travelling against the designated direction or overtaking at prohibited locations. Fines will then be imposed automatically.

Details of each violation will be sent immediately to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s (BRTA) database, after which an SMS notification will be sent to the registered vehicle owner. The fine can be paid online or via mobile phone.

The minister said repeated violations could lead to cancellation of a vehicle’s registration in accordance with existing BRTA laws.

He said the government would conduct extensive awareness campaigns through the Highway Police, Bangladesh Police and social media to familiarise motorists with the new system.

The initiative is expected to encourage compliance with traffic rules, strengthen enforcement and help reduce road accidents, officials said.
