BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Wednesday urged the public to embrace love and peace over destruction and vengeance as they work towards building a harmonious society.
In a video message broadcast at a grand rally organised by the BNP at its Nayaplatan central office in Dhaka, Khaleda Zia emphasized, “Let us come together to empower our youth and avoid all forms of destruction, revenge, and vengeance. We aim to build a knowledge-based society founded on love and peace.”
This was Khaleda’s first public address since President Mohammad Shahabuddin commuted her prison sentence on Tuesday. She had been imprisoned since 2018 on corruption charges brought by the previous Awami League government, which she and her party have claimed were politically motivated.
The BNP chairperson expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the "heroic children" whose efforts led to her release and honored the martyrs who lost their lives in the recent student-led movement that contributed to the downfall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.
“We have achieved relief from a fascist and illegal regime through relentless struggle and sacrifice. I extend my deepest thanks to our brave youth who made this victory possible through their do-or-die efforts,” Khaleda Zia said.
She highlighted the opportunity this victory presents for the nation to rebuild, saying, “We must create a prosperous Bangladesh, emerging from the wreckage of unprecedented corruption and destroyed democracy. Our students and youth represent our future.”
Khaleda Zia urged everyone to contribute to developing a modern Bangladesh, emphasizing peace, progress, and equity for all. “We need to build a democratic Bangladesh based on merit, competency, and knowledge to fulfill the dreams of our youth, for which they sacrificed so much,” she added.
In her message, Khaleda Zia also thanked the people for their support and efforts in securing her release and wished for continued support in her recovery.
