Protests in Mirpur Lead to Burning of Army, Police Vehicles
Tensions flared in the Kachukhet area of Mirpur, Dhaka, today (31 October) as garment workers from Diana Garments staged a protest, resulting in the destruction of an army vehicle and a police van.
The demonstration, aimed at voicing various demands, took place on the busy Mirpur-14 Kachukhet road, where protesters attempted to block traffic. The situation rapidly deteriorated when police and army personnel intervened to restore order. In the ensuing chaos, workers retaliated by throwing bricks and stones, prompting police to respond with baton charges for self-defense.
"At one point, protesters vandalized and set fire to two vehicles belonging to the police and army," reported Kazi Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Kafrul police station. He noted that the authorities' actions were aimed at dispersing the crowd in the face of escalating violence.
Fire Service Duty Officer Lima Khanam confirmed that two units of firefighters were dispatched to extinguish the flames. "We’re still investigating the origin of the fire," she stated, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding who initiated the arson.
In an effort to regain control, the army implemented strict measures, sealing off the area and limiting movement. As of now, the situation remains tense, with both sides on high alert.
