He explained that the distribution, which will involve various authorities including the Ministry of Food and the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), is expected to play a significant role in controlling rice prices. Local deputy commissioners (DCs) will oversee the distribution process across the country.
Majumdar made the announcement after addressing the ongoing DC conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, on the second day of the three-day event.
Under the Food Friendly Program, the Ministry of Food will distribute 3 lakh tonnes of rice over the next two months to coincide with Ramadan. This initiative will reach approximately 50 lakh families during the March-April period, with each family receiving 30 kg of rice at a subsidized price of Taka 15 per kg.
Additionally, the TCB will distribute a total of 1 lakh tonnes of rice, with 50,000 tonnes being allocated for each of the two months of March and April. Another 1 lakh tonnes of rice will be distributed through the Open Market Sale (OMS) program.
In a special move for the Eid festival, the government will distribute free rice to 1 crore families. Each of these families will receive 10 kg of rice, ensuring that they have adequate supplies for the celebration.
To ensure the smooth distribution of rice, intensive monitoring will be carried out by the DCs and Dhaka Metropolitan Police at 15-20 designated spots across the capital. The rice will be distributed through 122 centers and 70 trucks within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area. Magistrates and food department officials will also oversee the process to ensure transparency and efficiency.
