A new university, named Dhaka Central University, is set to be established by merging seven government colleges in the capital, according to Chief Adviser’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.
Azad confirmed the proposed name during a media briefing on Sunday at the Foreign Service Academy. The university will be administered by an interim administrator selected from the principals of the seven colleges. The location of the university's headquarters will depend on which principal is appointed as the interim administrator.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already interviewed the principals of the seven colleges, and the proposal will soon be sent to the Ministry of Education before being presented to the Council of Advisers for formal approval.
The colleges involved are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girls' College, Government Titumir College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, and Government Bangla College. Together, these institutions serve about 200,000 students and employ over 1,000 teachers.
These colleges were previously affiliated with Dhaka University on February 17, 2017.
