Indeed, the spirit of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman lives on through the Bangladesh that we now have, as reflected in our foreign policy which strictly abides by the age-old adage "friendship towards all, malice towards none" in seeking to create strong, lasting bonds with other nations; or living up to the values with which he had envisioned Bangladesh, one where the forces of unity overcome the forces of division.
Of course, there have been lapses, moments in our history when we strayed from Bangabandhu’s ideals keeping Bangladesh from fulfilling its potential -- we are still a nation plagued by overwhelming poverty, inequality, and other forms of social malaise which have resulted in our own people turning against one another.
And yet we have prevailed, and we always will.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally taken away from his people far too soon, but his resilience and devotion towards his motherland run deep within us all. As Bangladeshis, we need to remind ourselves of those values as we look to build the nation we want in the coming decades and ask ourselves if it is the Bangladesh that Bangabandhu had envisioned.
It is only by looking back at the roots of our country and the pillars upon which it was founded that we can truly build a Bangladesh that is truly progressive and forward-thinking. There is no better way we can honour the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
