BNP leader Safu shown arrested in arson case

BNP Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Safu was shown arrested on Tuesday in an arson case filed with Paltan Model Police Station in the capital.

This is the second arson case in which he has been shown arrested, and his lawyer said that it was done to delay his release from the jail in the first case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Sheikh Sadi passed the order after Md Shahin Miah, a Sub-Inspector of Paltan Police Station and also the Investigation Officer of the case, submitted an application in this regard.

Safu was shown arrested in the case, just before his release from the jail, said his lawyer Jahir Rayhan Jasim.

‘My client’s name was not included in the first information report of the case. But police showed him arrested in the case to delay his release from the jail in the first case," said Jasim.

Safu, a former General Secretary of Swechchhasebak Dal, was arrested from his from his residence in Shankar of Dhanmondi on February 8 this year. Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed with Hazaribagh Police Station about assaulting police and preventing them from discharging their duties. His name was not mentioned in the case.

On February 16, he was granted bail in the case. But he was shown arrested in an arson case filed with Ramna Model Police Station of the capital.

Safu, also former Vice President of Dhaka College Chhatra Sangsad, was granted bail on March 20 in the case. - Special Correspondent
