Shahabuddin to Leave Bangabhaban on Sunday

Outgoing President Mohammed Shahabuddin is set to leave Bangabhaban on Sunday (July 26) and return to his personal residence in Gulshan after resigning from the country’s highest constitutional office, according to sources at Bangabhaban.

Shahabuddin is currently staying at the official presidential residence but will vacate Bangabhaban after completion of the constitutional formalities related to his resignation.

Sources said preparations for his return to the Gulshan residence have already been completed, including security arrangements and other administrative measures.

Officials familiar with the process said a new telephone connection has been installed at the residence, while necessary logistical and security arrangements have also been put in place.

Although Bangabhaban has not issued an official statement on the relocation, officials said the process is expected to be completed on Sunday.

Before becoming the country’s 22nd President on April 24, 2023, Shahabuddin lived at the same Gulshan residence with his family. Following his resignation, he will return there.

Relevant government agencies will determine the level of security, protocol and other state facilities to be provided to the former president after he leaves Bangabhaban.

In his resignation letter submitted to the Speaker of Parliament, Shahabuddin cited serious health complications as the reason for stepping down.

He said he had been suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney-related complications for a long time and had previously undergone bypass surgery. He also mentioned that doctors had recently diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, a neurological disorder that can cause temporary loss of consciousness.

According to the resignation letter, his deteriorating physical condition, inability to continue performing official duties and need for long-term medical treatment made it difficult for him to carry out the responsibilities of the presidency.

Shahabuddin resigned by submitting a written letter to the Speaker under Article 50(3) of the Constitution.

Under Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has assumed the responsibilities of Acting President following the vacancy of the presidential office until a new president is elected.

Shahabuddin’s resignation ended his presidency, which began on April 24, 2023, and started the constitutional process for choosing Bangladesh’s next head of state.
