Dhaka, Aug 8 - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday expressed hope that Professor Muhammad Yunus will succeed in leading the interim government.

"Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been nominated by both the students and our party. We have entrusted him with this responsibility on behalf of the entire nation… and we believe he will fulfill it," he said.

Taking to reporters after visiting Nitor Hospital in the capital, the BNP leader also said, "We are very hopeful that under his successful and competent leadership, he will be able to address the issue (law and order) that you mentioned."

Stating that the root of the entire problem is a lack of democracy, Fakhrul said restoring democracy will be a key task for the interim government.

“The sooner democracy is restored, the more likely the interim government will succeed,” he noted.

When asked about their expectations from the interim government, Fakhrul said it must first take all necessary measures to restore law and order.

“Secondly, there must be a return to a democratic government through an election. Thirdly, steps should be taken to keep the economy functional,” the BNP leader said. - UNB
