Six Months Since Hasina's Downfall: A New Era for Bangladesh
It has been six months since the fall of Sheikh Hasina, marking the end of nearly 16 years of autocratic rule in Bangladesh. The shift, sparked by a massive student-led uprising, led to the resignation of the Awami League leader on August 5, 2024, and her subsequent flight to India. This day remains etched in the collective memory of the nation.
The peaceful demonstrations on August 5 saw millions across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, flood the streets to celebrate the end of a fascist regime. For many, it was a moment of relief as the country emerged from years of oppression.
In the student-led movement, which rallied against government discrimination, countless lives were lost. Among the martyrs were students like Abu Sayeed, Mugdho, and Wasim, as well as more than 1,000 individuals from various walks of life, who were killed during violent crackdowns by law enforcement and Awami League militants.
The violence left over 23,000 wounded, with many suffering life-altering injuries, including amputations. Hundreds of families mourn the loss of their loved ones, including those who lost their sight in clashes with security forces and political thugs.
Today, as Bangladesh reflects on this historic shift, the country stands at the threshold of a new chapter—one born from sacrifice and the unwavering resilience of its people.
